What You Can Do Today for a Cleaner Home

Emilie Barnes offers a plan for those feeling overwhelmed at the thought of cleaning and de-cluttering their home.

  1. Get three black trash bags and a timer.
  2. Label your bags "give away," "throw away" and "put away."
  3. Walk out your front door, turn around, come back in. Set your timer for 15 minutes.
  4. Start with your hall closet or your room to your right or left, and work your way clockwise around that room.
  5. Analyze each item; if it's ripped or broken, throw it away. If it hasn't been used in a year, consider giving it away. If you can't bear to part with it, store it. If you're using it regularly, keep it!
  6. After 15 minutes, set everything aside until tomorrow (maybe in the garage).
  7. Repeat until you've covered every room or closet in the house.
  8. Now, repeat this process with 15 minutes of cleaning.
