Recognizing a Stroke with Three Questions

Perform this simple "S-T-R Test" to help determine if someone is suffering a stroke.

You may be able to recognize the onset of a stroke by using the "S-T-R Test" — asking the victim three simple questions:

S — Ask the individual to Smile.
T — Ask the individual to Talk in simple sentences.
R — Ask the individual to Raise both arms.

Disclaimer: This simple test, funded by an American Stroke Association (ASA) grant, was reported at the 28th annual International Stroke Conference. However, the ASA has not yet endorsed the test, because it was conducted on only a small group of people. Still, many doctors agree that it can be a helpful tool in identifying a stroke. If you suspect a stroke is occurring, call a physician immediately.
