Quick Tips for Smart Shopping
From home management expert Kathy Peel.
- Create a routine-shop at the same store at the same time.
- Don't shop when hungry or tired.
- Keep an ongoing shopping list in a centralized location so family members can add items as they run out of them.
- Don't buy health and beauty items at the grocery store. They're usually cheaper at a drugstore or discount store.
- Running from store to store to take advantage of advertised sales can cost you money (in gas) and time. Buy the specials at the store you shop at and use manufacturer's coupons when possible.
- Get in and out of the store as quickly as possible. The more time you're there, the more you'll spend.
- Don't assume that the larger size is cheaper. Check per unit prices.
- Be aware of foods you throw out at the end of the week. If you always waste a quart of milk or some fruit, buy less next time.
- Buy a few frozen meals to have on hand. They're cheaper than takeout.
- Bag your own groceries and organize them the way they will go into your kitchen.
- Keep a large laundry basket in your trunk — it'll save you trips into your home.
- Buy bagged fruit instead of loose and save up to a dollar a pound.
